What is a Rainforest???

A rainforest can be described as many things, and has many different qualities to it.  Here are some of the things that rainforests might have!

*gets high amounts of rain each year. (thus named the RAIN forest.)

*Is a very hot and humid area.

*contain plant life

*contain animal life

All of the things listed above can describe what a rainforest is like.

Rainforest

We all know that flowers smell good, decorate rooms, and are found all over the world... Including the rain forest.  Rain forests hold the most flowers on earth!  There are many different types of flowers, from the ecuadorian rainforest flower, to the beautiful ginger flower.  Flowers are not only beautiful, but some provide food for creatures that live in the rainforest!  Since some animals eat flowers, the Food chain of the rainforest depends on the flowers that are located inside the rain forests.  insects of all types are attracted to flowers as a food source also, so larger animals do not only eat the flowers, but also the bugs on them!

Because of these reasons, flowers are a necessity to all of those critters that live in the rainforest.  Here are a few flowers that I thought were pretty neat!

* the forest flame is a bright red color with a little bit of yellow in it.  Many people grow these plants in their homes, and some people even think it is the most beautiful flower in the rainforest.

* The emerald ebony may be a tree, but it grows large beautiful flowers, that are a lavender-blue color.  For all of the year, the tree grows these silky, and fun-colored flowers.  These flowers are also grown in homes!

* Angels hair is a flower that grows in groups of bright pink and also white.  A strange fact about this pretty flower is that some countries use it as firewood!

Fourth of July, and the Rain Forest

On the fourth of July, America celebrates its independence from Brittan. Just as we showed our independence from Brittan, we can show our independence for our own ideas. Many of us believe in saving the rain forests, and should stand up for our ideas, just as we did with thinking we should have our own country. Once you start something, others may follow along. This could cause a serious, and very good impact on the earth.

Here are a few ideas of how you could contribute in a small way to conserve the rain forest on the 4th of July.

* Many people hold parties on the fourth of July, so to help not waste paper, you could e-mail your invitations instead of sending them in the mail.

*Many people also use things like confetti to celebrate on these days, so you could look for recycled confetti to help not waste paper.

Meet the PE Kids TV Host

Paradise Earth Kids t.v. is hosted by a cotton topped tamarin named Fuzz. Tamarins like Fuzz live in humid tropical forests, dry deciduous forests, and also secondary growth forests. Cotton topped tamarins are one of the three tamarin species. The Paradise Earth team found Fuzz in Belize, which is in the northern part of South America. Cotton topped tamarins mainly eat insects, fruit, plant exudates, and also nectar, but they have also eaten other things, like amphibians. Tamarins sleep in groups, which all leave the tree at the same time in the morning. During a regular day, tamarins like to forage, sleep, and also travel. Tamarins do not usually sleep in the same trees every night, so this helps them avoid predators.

The New Light Bulb

The standard florescent light bulb has been becoming less popular due to a new light bulb that is energy-friendly. This new light bulb does more than just saving energy, it also saves a lot of money. These new light bulbs use 70% less energy than a standard light bulb, and it also lasts about ten times longer than them, for about the same amount of light. These light bulbs may cost about five dollars more, but if you have about thirty light bulbs in your house, replacing them with these new ones, can save you near $900during the life of the bulb! So these light bulbs, not only save energy and the environment, but they save you a lot of money too!

These light bulbs are not however compleately wonderful, because they have a danger to them. If one of these light bulbs breaks, the room must be evacuated for at least 15 minuites. This is because the energy saving light bulb holds a toxic mercury in it. If you do use these light bulbs and one breaks, after you evacuate the room, you need to sweep the light bulb up, while wearing gloves to protect you from the mercury. Do not vacume the broken light bulb parts! Another bad thing about these new light bulbs, is that they can not be simply thrown away. They have to be stored in special bins, where other things such as batteries are put, and then brought to a council dump. Some worries about not properly disposing of the light bulbs, and having it contaminate our water supplies have come up. Overall these new light bulbs effect our environments in good and bad ways.

Many people hear about rainforest conservation, and that they should help. The only thing is, many people do not know how to help. Here are a few simple ways you can contribute to saving rainforests all over the world.

* Many trees in the rainforests are being cut down to be used as paper. To help reduce the ammount of paper needed,use both sides of the paper and once you are done with it...RECYCLE!!!

*try to only buy recycled paper, and other recycled products instead of new ones

By doing these small little things you can save many trees in the rainforests all over the world, and the more people that do it the more trees we save!!!
